The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
The gordongroup team was pleased to be involved in Canadian Heritage’s Mathieu Da Costa Challenge, a national art and creative writing competition that encourages young people to discover how diversity has helped shape Canada.
The campaign celebrates the life of Mathieu Da Costa, a language interpreter of African descent who travelled throughout the Atlantic world in the early 1600s helping European explorers communicate with Aboriginal peoples.
To boost participation in the contest, gordongroup revitalized the Mathieu Da Costa Challenge brand, giving it a colourful new look and feel that would appeal to youth. The contest package we designed included a poster, a brochure, an information sheet, an entry form and bookmarks. The packages were marketed to schools, libraries, associations and community centres across the country. We also revitalized the Challenge Web site.
Faced with advertising budget restrictions, gordongroup turned to community relations as an alternative means of publicizing the Challenge, securing sponsorships with a variety of media outlets.
